Novel Proteins
At B&T Pets, we believe better nutrition starts with better ingredients. For many pets, this means moving beyond the most common proteins and learning about alternatives that may be simpler, cleaner, and easier to tolerate.

Novel proteins are protein sources that are less commonly used in traditional pet foods. Options such as venison, duck, kangaroo, rabbit, and seal provide complete nutrition while helping reduce repeated exposure to the same ingredients over time—an approach often explored by pet parents managing food sensitivities or dietary intolerances.

Our work with novel proteins grew from a desire to better understand how single-ingredient, minimally processed treats can fit into a more intentional feeding strategy. Beginning with seal and expanding to other less common proteins, our treats—such as Seal Crisps, Emu Love Bites, and Bunny Onesies—are designed to showcase each protein in its simplest form, without unnecessary additives or fillers.

This category explores what novel proteins are, why they are used in pet nutrition, and how thoughtfully sourced, single-ingredient options can support variety, transparency, and confidence in how pets are fed.
Novel proteins refer to protein sources that are not commonly used in traditional pet foods. Unlike standard proteins like chicken, and beef, novel proteins include options such as venison, kangaroo, duck, and even insect-based proteins. These alternative sources can provide essential nutrients while minimizing the risk of food sensitivities and allergies.
Imagine the moment you’re reaching for your pup's favorite treat, only to replay your vet's diagnosis, “Unfortunately, your pet has a food allergy.” The mix of emotions return, we've been there - be it shock, sadness, frustration, and for us it was even guilt. You worry about inadvertently causing discomfort to your pet, and recall some of the symptoms of a food allergy from the past.
While lifespan refers to the number of years your pet lives, healthspan focuses on the quality of those years. It’s about ensuring that your fur-family remains active, vibrant, and free from chronic ailments as they age.
For us, it’s about honoring the bond we share with our pets and ensuring that, in every decision we make, we’re putting their well-being first—because they depend on us to make the right choices for them.
