In this series of posts, we explore each of the novel proteins we work with here at B&T Pets. This time, let's look at Kangaroo. This is one of the few proteins that we use here at B&T Pets which is not sourced from within Canada - we use kangaroo meat that is imported from Australia.

Let’s dive into what makes kangaroo a fantastic protein choice, the benefits it offers, and how incorporating it into your dog or cat's diet can contribute to their long-term health and happiness.

In this article, we will focus on:

A Quick Review of Novel Proteins

Novel proteins refer to less common protein sources not typically found in traditional pet foods. These are often used in limited-ingredient diets, especially for pets with food sensitivities or allergies. Common examples include kangaroo, rabbit, and venison. The advantage of novel proteins is their reduced likelihood of causing allergic reactions, particularly in pets sensitive to proteins like chicken, beef, or pork.

Why Kangaroo?

Kangaroo has gained popularity as a novel protein source for several compelling reasons:

  • Hypoallergenic Properties: Kangaroo is rarely found in common pet diets, making it an excellent choice for pets with food sensitivities.

  • Nutrient-Rich: It is a great source of lean protein, iron, zinc, and B vitamins, contributing to overall health.

  • Low in Fat: Kangaroo meat is naturally lean, making it suitable for pets that need to manage their weight.

  • Sustainably Sourced: Kangaroo is often harvested from the wild under strict regulations, promoting ethical and sustainable meat consumption.

The Benefits of Kangaroo for Your Pet

Incorporating kangaroo into your pet’s diet can offer multiple health benefits:

  1. Improved Digestibility: Kangaroo is easily digestible, which is beneficial for pets with sensitive stomachs.

  2. Rich in Essential Amino Acids: It provides the necessary amino acids to support muscle growth, tissue repair, and overall vitality.

  3. Boosts Immune Health: Kangaroo is rich in zinc and iron, crucial for supporting your pet’s immune system.

  4. Supports Skin and Coat Health: The presence of omega-3 fatty acids contributes to a shiny coat and healthy skin.

  5. Weight Management: Being low in fat and calories, kangaroo is an ideal option for pets needing to maintain or reduce weight.

How to Incorporate Kangaroo into Your Pet's Diet

Introducing kangaroo can be a simple and smooth process with these tips:

  1. Start Gradually: Begin with small amounts to monitor for any allergic reactions or digestive issues.

  2. Choose High-Quality Products: Opt for dog food and treats that feature kangaroo as the primary ingredient, focusing on natural, grain-free, and minimally processed options.

  3. Monitor Health: Watch for any changes in your pet’s digestion, coat quality, or energy levels, adjusting as necessary.

Final Thoughts

Kangaroo stands out as an excellent novel protein option for pets, offering a range of health benefits from improved digestion to enhanced immune support. Its hypoallergenic properties make it a top choice for dogs and cats with food sensitivities, while its rich nutrient profile supports overall health and vitality. Introducing kangaroo into your pet’s diet could be a rewarding step towards a healthier and happier life for your pet.
